Con el Cd Lark's Tongues In Aspic el sonido de la banda cambia con respecto a los anteriores trabajos, puesto que se añaden nuevos instrumentos, como el violin y percusiones exóticas. Además, varias veces se notan atmósferas oscuras, heredadas de la música de Béla Bartók, e incluso pesadas, parecidas al heavy metal.

El sonido de Red es muy rockero en comparación a los álbumes de la primera época de la banda. Red es usualmente considerado uno de los mejores esfuerzos de la banda, y fue su último álbum en 7 años, ya que la banda se separó tras el mismo para volver en 1981, pero con una alineación y un estilo completamente diferentes.
